Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office Continues to Work Diligently To Prosecute Cold Case Rapes

The Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office Continues to work diligently to prosecute cold case rapes and seek justice for victims.

This past week, the District Attorney’s Office Cold Case Sexual Assault Unit, also known as SAKI, charged three more individuals with rape.
Carlos Eduardo Parra-Cordova, Estevan Sandoval, and Julius Edwards III were each charged with sexual assaults relating to separate rape kit backlog cases.
The week prior, prosecutors indicted two other rape suspects in cases that had been sitting dormant since the 1990s.

So far this year, prosecutors have charged 11 people with sexual assault in what were cold case rapes. In many cases, rape kits sat on shelves untested. Now, the backlog is being cleared. Investigators are locating victims, witnesses and evidence to try and get justice for victims of these horrific crimes.

Special Agents in the District Attorney’s office arrested former APS bus driver Ralph Martinez in July. Investigators believe he is linked to at least three sexual assaults from the 1980s and 1990s.

“The prosecutors and investigators are dedicated to doing this, every single day, full time. They look at these old cases and do everything they can to hold people accountable,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman. “They really are doing an amazing job to bring some sense of justice to these victims,” Bregman said.
