MORE SUSPECTS OF VIOLENT CRIME DETAINED IN BERNALILLO COUNTY

Albuquerque, NM –
More and more people suspected of committing violent crimes in Bernalillo County — are remaining in custody pending trial.
So far this year, 60.2% of pre-trial detention motions were granted by judges, meaning fewer violent suspects are getting released back out on the streets.
Last year, at this time, 51.9% of people suspected of violent crimes were detained.
January – October 2023 = 60.2% of pretrial detention motions granted. (534 detention motions granted).
January – October 2022 = 51.9% of pretrial detention motions granted. (465 detention motions granted).
And this month, October 2023, 66.7% of pretrial detention motions were granted. That’s a dramatic increase from last October 2022, when only 26.8% of preventative detention motions were approved by judges.

“We are very pleased we’re keeping more violent offenders detained this year,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman. “This is the result of the hard work our prosecutors are doing every day in court, and this is having a direct impact on violent crime,” Bregman said.
