Michael Ramirez

DETAINED — STUDENT CHARGED WITH BRINGING GUNS AND AMMO TO SCHOOL LAST WEEK WILL STAY BEHIND BARS. INVESTIGATORS SAY ONE OF THOSE GUNS WAS TIED TO A DRIVE-BY SHOOTING AT SANDIA HIGH SCHOOL LAST NOVEMBER.

Today a judge ruled high school student Michael Ramirez will remain in custody as his case makes its way through the courts.

At a hearing today, investigators told the judge they believe one of the guns found in Michael Ramirez’s car at La Academia De Esperanza Charter School on April 13 is tied to three drive-by shootings in Northeast Albuquerque in the past several months. Police say one of those shootings happened last November at Sandia High School. One of the guns also had an extended magazine and both pistols were partially loaded with hollow point ammunition.

Investigators say April 11, Ramirez and several classmates at La Academia De Esperanza Charter School told another student they wanted to buy the handguns, but instead masked themselves, then armed with an assault rifle, robbed the student of those two 9mm handguns. One of the 9mm guns is tied to three drive-by shootings.

Immediately following the hearing, investigators learned the second stolen handgun is tied to 12 shooting incidents. Ramirez is not a suspect in those cases.

Today a judge ruled there is no greater danger than weapons being brought onto school campuses, and ordered Ramirez to remain in Custody.

“If you bring guns to school, you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.
