Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman, works with Mexican authorities to address fentanyl, illegal guns and human trafficking crisis.
Albuquerque, NM – June 26, 2023
Bernalillo County DA Sam Bregman just returned from a two day trip to Mexico including stops in Juarez and Chihuahua City.
Bregman met with Gilberto Loya Chávez, the Secretary of Public Safety of the State of Chihuahua. There, Bregman toured the C7 Facility, similar to Albuquerque’s Real Time Crime Center.
The two exchanged ideas on security matters between Bernalillo County and Chihuahua, with a focus on fighting human trafficking, the fentanyl crisis and circulation of illegal weapons between the two states. Loya told Bregman the cartels’ largest profits right now come from smuggling human beings, surpassing drug trafficking and other illegal activities, as their main source of income.
Bregman and Loya signed Letters of Understanding — agreements that both the Bernalillo County District Attorney’s Office and Chihuahua will work together to try and stop these criminal organizations impacting both states.
While in Chihuahua, DA Bregman also met with César Gustavo Jáuregui Moreno, the Attorney General of the State of Chihuahua. Both leaders emphasized the need to
address methods to reduce human trafficking.
District Attorney Bregman also met with members of the Superior Court of Justice.
Judicial leaders discussed their state’s recent criminal justice reform, with an emphasis on treatment for addictions to end the cycle of drug use and violence impacting both Bernalillo County and Chihuahua, as well as programs to stop violence against women and children.
“We not only had an impactful dialogue, but we also signed agreements that we will work together. Too many people are hurting. Too many people are dying. This is only the beginning of a relationship where both criminal judicial systems will work together”.
