ALBUQUERQUE TEEN ARRESTED AND CHARGED WITH BRINGING TWO GUNS, AMMUNITION AND CLIP TO SCHOOL
Police say Thursday afternoon, 18 year old Michael Ramirez brought two handguns with 33 rounds of ammunition to La Academia De Esperanza Charter School in Albuquerque.
A teacher overheard two students talking about the guns on campus. She notified the principal who called APS Police. Officers located the guns, ammunition, and clip in the student’s car on campus. Investigators say Ramirez was trying to sell a gun to another student.
“This happened a few weeks after I announced a zero tolerance policy of guns on school property. Ramirez will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.
“I want to thank all the school officials, including the teacher and APS police, for their swift action. Police immediately arrested Ramirez after the guns were discovered. Thank God no child or school official was hurt,” Bregman said.
Police filed a criminal complaint against Ramirez for Unlawful Carrying of a Deadly Weapon on School Premises and Receiving Stolen Property. Police say one of the guns was stolen. He is currently in custody at MDC. This case will be brought forward to the Grand Jury immediately and we will ask the court that he be detained pending trial.
“I want to repeat that this office, law enforcement, and our schools will not tolerate guns on school grounds. Zero tolerance, plain and simple,” Bregman said.
At this time these charges are only allegations. Ramirez is presumed innocent until and unless he is proven guilty.
