This week, Albuquerque police charged Nathan Castillo and Brian Singer with stealing merchandise from the Walgreens on Harper and Wyoming in northeast Albuquerque.
ย
Officers arrested Joshua Peralto for shoplifting at the Albertsons across the street from Walgreens. Organized Retail Crime Detectives believe they are part of a group of up to 10 people who repeatedly and boldly shoplift from stores in the area on a daily basis, sometimes 3 to 4 times a day.
ย
Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman is asking that at least two of the suspects, Peralto and Castillo, remain in custody as their cases go through the judicial process.
ย
“This kind of conduct is so brazen, it jeopardizes the safety of the community,” said Bernalillo County District Attorney Sam Bregman.
ย
This year, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and lawmakers passed legislation that makes suspects who repeatedly shoplift face tougher penalties.
ย
“We’re grateful for these new laws. This constant retail crime must stop. New Mexicans should be allowed to go shopping without being terrified. We’re going to hold the people who commit these crimes accountable,” Bregman said.
