Bernalillo County District Attorney Raúl Torrez along with 14 other prosecutors across the U.S. have joined Measures for Justice, the Association of Prosecuting Attorneys, and Tableau Foundation on a new initiative to develop tools and services to help prosecutors provide critical demographic data about their cases and facilitate equitable treatment within the criminal justice system. 

The public dashboard created by Measures for Justice provides data-driven assessment of outcomes, allowing the user to recognize disparities in treatment and outcomes for vulnerable populations and craft standards that treat all persons equitably, facilitating a transparent conversation among community members and law enforcement agencies. 

“Systemic racism has to end,” Torrez said. “Criminal justice leaders must take responsibility for driving reforms that improve fairness and consistency in prosecutorial decision-making and justice system performance. I am thrilled to be spearheading this initiative in New Mexico and taking the lead in a national effort that will build community trust in the justice system through transparency and accountability.”

The partnership is targeting a pilot cohort of 15 cities for the program. As of the program’s launch, Bernalillo County along with East Baton Rouge Parish, LA and Jackson County, MO, are  implementing the tools.
